A VIRTUAL SHOWROOM #2

VISUAL JAZZ

As many of you may know, this has been a very well travelled year.

Four exhibitions in the US and a great deal of activity related to creativity and innovation, with workshops and University seminars ,both in the US and Argentina, are a clear example of this.

As a result, my activity in the local (Argentine) art market has been quite limited. For that reason, at least in a virtual environment, I would like  show some of the works currently available in  Buenos Aires, should any of them spark your interest.

Hasta la próxima!

Harlem Nocturne

VISUAL JAZZ

This is a new painting. Inspired by the great Earle Hagen.

His name may not ring many bells to most people, but almost everyone has heard at one time or another, many of his songs. The reason being that he was a prolific, and sought after, TV theme writer.

Somiab-harlem-nocturne-2016-50cmx50cme of his credits include the songs for The Andy Griffith Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, That Girl, and The Mod Squad just to mention some of the sounds you may be familiar with from childhood, or from re-runs at some from the many “Classic TV” channels.

Hagen also composed one the most covered jazz songs in history:”Harlem Nocturne“, which was supposed to be just a song, but found its way into television as well many years later, as the theme for Mike Hammer.

Written in 1939 while Hagen was an arranger with the Ray Noble Orchestra, the song has been covered by most big bands, Jazz ensambles, R&B bands, and instrumental bands since it was first written. Someone even wrote some lyrics for it which were then sung by the “Velvet Fog” himself, Mr. Mel Tormé.

This wonderful song inspired my piece Harlem Nocturne with its deep reds and swinging surfaces in a romantic and vibrant composition.

And this is the version of this song played by the great Duke Ellington.

THE SUNDAY CONCERT: A Sunday concert on a 4th of July Monday

cards naples polaroid monks dream

Today’s concert is dedicated to this very special musical ensemble that was put together for a 1971 concert in Copenhagen.

They are: Thelonious Monk on piano, Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Sonny Stitt on sax, Kai Winding on the trombone, Al McKibbon on base, and Art Blakey on drums.

It is worth a listen on this July 4th. America’s cultural heritage is prolific,  and the jazz genre and its great musicians and composers have been one of the greatest cultural gifts America has given the world.

Enjoy! And happy fourth of July!

Until next time.

WHEN PAINTING AIN´T JUST PAINTING

A little bit of intimacy.

Painting and creating as it was filmed by the cameras of Artez TV (https://www.youtube.com/user/arteztvfull) and Revista Iniciar (http://www.revistainiciar.com.ar) during an interview in 2014.

Re-edited with a bit of the great Ahmad Jamal in the background to keep us company.

Until next time!

A Cultural Effort of International proportions

Front Page Florida Weekly June 9 2016Stay in May, as the traditional Art Naples World Festival is now known, is a magnificent example of a comunity getting together to show and involve the general public in the best that the Arts have to offer.

I was very lucky to take part in this year´s event through the invitation of the Naples Art Association and the Festival organizers, and I must say I was impressed by the quality, the care and the variety that this group of hard working individuals have managed to put together year after year.

Just in case you have not seen any of my previous videos, here is a compilation from the Festivals own collection of promotional shorts.

Enjoy (and consider Naples in May for your next vacation! It is very much worth your while!)

Until next time.

FORTY SOMETHING

Ignacio Alperin Bruvera's avatarIGNACIO ALPERIN: THE ART OF THINKING OUT LOUD / EL ARTE DE PENSAR EN VOZ ALTA

The number 40 is of great importance in Judeo-Christian tradition.

fotos-1927478h640In biblical times, it was assumed that a person would die 40 days after he or she stopped breathing. The great Kings of Israel (Saul, David and Salomon) all reigned for forty years, Jonas preached for 40 days before Nineveh’s destruction, Noah’s great rains lasted 40 days and Moses received his call at 40 years of age and stayed in Sinai for 40 days. Furthermore, the chosen people lived in the desert for 40 years, while Jesus preached for 40 months, was tempted in the same desert by the devil for 40 days, disappeared from his burial place within 40 hours and appeared after resurrection, and before ascension, for exactly 40 days. And, obviously, forty days is the preparation time before Easter.

Forty was presumed to be THE number required for full transformation or renewal.

So is then forty a…
